We live in a society that does not actively encourage us to feel – particularly uncomfortable feelings. We are often encouraged to keep ourselves “busy” so that we don’t sit in the unpleasantness, and so we find ourselves binge watching tv, working excessively, “unwinding” with a drink, or just generally immersing ourselves in anything that takes our focus away from the things that we don’t want to think about.
But they NEVER go away. They just go down deep inside you, and try to escape in various ways – they can come out in unhealthy behaviours, in physical ailments, in toxic thought patterns. The hardest thing to do is just to be still and feel all of the grief and all of the sadness and hurt that has come from your trauma.
Unprocessed grief and trauma, whether it’s ‘big T’ Trauma, or generalised ‘litle t’ trauma (your brain doesn’t know the difference), will impact your health, relationships, your general sense of wellbeing, and just about any aspect of your life that you can think of.
But you are stronger than you think. No matter how much it hurts to stop and face your pain, no matter how uncomfortable you feel, it will not kill you. And it’s not a matter of reliving an event – we don’t want you to repeatedly visit the trauma itself – just visit your feelings.
It definitely helps to have a cheer squad in your corner – someone to help you talk through what you need to unpack. Someone who sees you without any judgement, and only with encouragement.
